Business, Communication, Marketing, PR, Social Media

A decade of change…

Thirteen (13) years after being a second year student, I had coffee with one of my Varsity lecturers (now also a friend). We were laughing at the fact that it’s been 13 years since “Integrated Marketing Communication” was the hot topic and we were told (and taught) that THAT was the future of Marketing. Two years later, Facebook made it’s appearance and the whole game changed…

Over the last decade, the whole Communication industry changed from 360 degree agencies, to specialized agencies, to now some very confused agency set-ups. Where does PR really fit in? Is social media part of PR or Marketing? And where do we fit digital in? How much time and effort should we still put into traditional marketing and PR? I hate boxes and don’t understand people who need to fit everything into a box. That is why I made sure that I always worked on projects that required more than one “box” of skills.

Critics loved throwing that “Jack of all trades but master of none” saying my way. Today, I laugh at it as it’s now a matter of “a Jack of all trades and a master of SOME”. You see, being a Jack of all trades in today’s time has been the reason MSM landed contracts that others were fighting to get. Why? At MSM we look at it with a helicopter view and understand every part of what is necessary to deliver a kick-a$$ and unique Communication strategy and execution. We often break the rules (never the law), we do stuff differently than some agencies, but ultimately it’s all done with one purpose in mind: to get sh!t done!
